Here is the entire psalm, all 16 verses, spread over the front and back of a plaque just under four centimeters long. The letters are blackened and stand out darkly against the matte silver, like ink on an old sheet. The lettering is designed in the style of Old Church Slavonic letters. Above the text curves an ornament, through whose round opening the loop passes.

What does Psalm 91 mean?

Psalm 91 is one of the best-known prayers in the Bible and is considered a psalm of protection. In the Luther Bible, it begins with "He who sits under the shadow of the Almighty and abides under the shelter of the Most High". At the end is God's promise to hear the petitioner in their distress.

Why do Orthodox families say Psalm 90 instead? The Orthodox Church counts the psalms according to the Greek Bible, where the same text bears the number 90. In Russian piety, it is customary to give the psalm to people who are going far away, in the past, for example, as a narrow belt with printed text. As a pendant, no one sees it under the shirt, and yet it is always with them.

A gift of faith for men — for what occasion?

For an adult baptism, the pendant is a sign that goes with them in everyday life. For a name day, which in Orthodox families often counts for more than a birthday, it is equally suitable. Before a long journey or a new chapter in life, it gives them something that lasts. And for Father's Day or a milestone birthday, it is the answer for the man who already has everything, except something meaningful.

Chain, engraving and care

The pendant comes without a chain and hangs just as well on a silver chain as on a leather cord. Engraving is not possible because both sides are inscribed. The gift becomes personal with a SilberVerse card, available free of charge upon request: a short verse that we write for you for the occasion and name. Wipe the silver with a soft cloth. Silver dip and polishing paste can take away the contrast of the blackened lettering.

Psalm 91 pendant — briefly answered

What is a prayer of protection?
One of the oldest is Psalm 91, and that is exactly what is on this pendant. In the Orthodox tradition, one also asks the guardian angel for help, in silver, for example, with the Tischikone guardian angel for the home.

What is the German text of Psalm 91?
You can find the full wording in any German Bible under Psalm 91. The best-known verse in the Luther Bible is: "For he has commanded his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways."

Is the pendant also suitable for Catholic or Protestant Christians?
Yes. Psalm 91 is in every Bible, only the numbering differs. The text on the silver is Russian, the meaning remains the same.
