An engraving is the smallest story a silver piece can tell. Three words, four words — sometimes just a date. But they transform the gift from an object into an heirloom. Our standard is diamond engraving in our own Chemnitz workshop. For special pieces — such as ZARAMELLA classics or SevChern Niello works — the manufacturer engraves directly. We individually check which method is suitable for your piece with every inquiry.

What Makes an Engraving

An engraving is more than just lettering. It is permanently incorporated into the silver — by diamond stylus, laser, or hand engraving, depending on the piece and manufacturer. What has been engraved remains: through polishes, through generations. That is the difference between a gift that is beautiful and a gift that tells a story.

The content of an engraving is usually small. A first name. A birth date. A dedication in three or four words. Sometimes a symbol, a logo, a family motto. For us, up to 30 characters are standard — anything beyond that will be discussed individually. What ends up there is up to you. We can help with suggestions if you're not yet sure.

Every engraving is preceded by a check: Not every silver article is technically suitable — the shape, surface, and finish also play a role. Before you order, we will tell you whether your desired engraving is possible on your desired piece, and if not, what the alternatives are.

Three Methods, Three Approaches

We work with three engraving methods in parallel, because different types of silver require different tools. Which method is suitable for your piece depends on the manufacturer, the finish, and your wishes — we will decide upon your inquiry and let you know before you order.

1. Diamond Engraving in Our Own Workshop in Chemnitz (Standard)

Our standard process for classic silver articles without elaborate finishes — baby spoons without niello, cups without gilding, birth medals, letter openers, keychains, jewelry boxes. A finely sharpened diamond needle precisely inscribes the engraving into the silver, without removing material. The result is sharp, durable, and crafted close to the workshop. Processing time approx. three to five business days.

2. Manufacturer Engraving ZARAMELLA (Laser or Diamond)

For classic ZARAMELLA silver articles (Italian silversmith ZARAMELLA Argenti), the manufacturer performs the engraving directly. Two methods are available: laser engraving for clear, even lines — especially for small fonts and machine precision — or diamond engraving for a more artisanal look with warmer lines. We will clarify with the manufacturer which method is suitable for your piece before you order.

3. Manufacturer Engraving SevChern for Niello Silver (Special)

Niello pieces from the SevChern manufactory in Veliki Ustyug are engraved directly by the manufacturer — optionally as diamond or hand engraving. For these pieces, there are two special features that are not possible anywhere else:

• Engraving integrated into the manufacturing process. The engraving must be planned from the outset: First it is engraved, then the piece goes through niello melting, gilding, and final polishing. The engraving becomes part of the finished piece, not an afterthought. This only works for pieces that are not yet finally manufactured — i.e., with a pre-order. Processing time: several weeks, depending on the piece.
• Blackened engraving (oxidation) — exclusive to SevChern Niello. A unique feature that no one else offers: An already applied diamond engraving is subsequently oxidized (blackened) so that the lines glow dark in the silver — the engraving thus picks up the look of the niello and harmonizes with the piece, instead of just sitting on top of it. We offer this method exclusively for SevChern niello pieces because it creates a special visual connection to the niello lines precisely there.

If you don't want to decide between the methods — we will advise you based on your specific piece. We will provide you with a clear proposal including processing time and effort before you order.

Which Products Can Be Engraved

Most of our silver articles can be engraved — some as standard, some after review. These categories cover the majority:

• Christening Gifts: Christening cups, christening spoons, christening medals, birth spoons — all generally engravable.
• Baby Gifts: Baby rattles, baby spoons, teething rings, picture frames.
• Children's Cutlery and Children's Cups: Children's cups and children's cutlery — also with niello decoration via manufacturer engraving.
• Weddings, Anniversaries, Occasions: Silverware, coffee and tea sets, table cutlery, trophies, jewelry boxes, photo frames.
• Men's Accessories: Flasks, cufflinks, cigarette cases, keychains, money clips, paperweights.
• Women's Jewelry: Jewelry boxes, pendants with sufficient surface area, jewelry cases.

If your desired item cannot be directly engraved, we often find an alternative — a second piece from the same line, a different position on the same piece, or an insert instead of direct engraving. Just ask us.

How to Make an Inquiry — Step by Step

1. Send inquiry. Via our contact form, you provide us with the key data: desired item (with link or product number), desired engraving text (up to 30 characters standard, more on request), desired font (if a specific one), and position of the engraving. You can attach images, sketches, or your own logos directly.
2. Feasibility check. We check whether the engraving on your desired item is technically feasible and which method is suitable — our own workshop or the manufacturer. If adjustments are needed, we suggest alternatives: different position, shorter text, different piece.
3. Confirmation and order. Once the engraving has been checked, we send you an email confirmation with the specific processing time. You then order the piece via our shop. The engraving costs are calculated separately — as a second item or via an additional invoice, as desired.
4. Payment for engraving. By bank transfer, PayPal, or via the usual payment options of our shop. The order proceeds after payment is received.
5. Implementation and shipping. In-house workshop engravings are ready after three to five business days, manufacturer engravings take several weeks depending on the piece. You will receive a shipping notification as soon as your item is on its way.

Standard engravings in our workshop are staggered by character count — transparent and without hidden costs:

Manufacturer engravings (for niello pieces or gilding) have their own prices, which we calculate individually — they depend on the piece, complexity, and processing time. You will receive the price in the confirmation email before you order.

Engraving and SilberVerse — The Two Layers of a Message

An engraving carries what fits in twenty or thirty characters — the name, the date, the shortest form of your dedication. What goes beyond that — the entire verse, the longer message to the child, the saying for the wedding — fits on a SilberVerse card: handwritten poetry on a photo card, in a matching picture frame, free of charge upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Engraving Service

Which fonts are available?
We offer classic fonts — from simple modern to traditional calligraphic. After your inquiry, we will send you an overview with examples so you can choose the right font for your piece. Your own fonts or logos are also possible; simply send us the file with your inquiry.

Which engraving method do you use?
The standard is diamond engraving in our own workshop in Chemnitz — precise, durable, and done in-house. For ZARAMELLA pieces, the manufacturer offers a choice of laser or diamond engraving. For SevChern Niello works, the manufacturer engraves directly with diamond or hand engraving during the manufacturing process; in addition, we offer blackened engraving (oxidation) there — exclusive to SevChern Niello pieces, because the engraving thus picks up the look of the niello black. We will check which method is suitable for your specific piece when you inquire.

How long does an engraving take?
Standard engravings in the in-house workshop take three to five business days after confirmation. Manufacturer engravings (niello or gilding) depend on the piece and take longer — we will inform you of the exact processing time in the confirmation email before you order.

Can I have an already purchased item engraved later?
For many pieces, this is possible — depending on the finish and the desired position. Send us the piece (or a photo and description), and we will check the possibility. However, manufacturer engravings on already finished niello pieces are not possible, because the engraving must be done before the niello processing.

What happens if the engraving is not possible on the desired item?
We will provide you with an alternative suggestion — either another piece from the same product line, a modified engraving position on the same piece, or an insert instead of direct engraving (for example, a SilberVerse card). We will not leave you without a solution.

Are special characters, Cyrillic script, or diacritics possible?
Umlauts (ä, ö, ü, ß) are standard. Cyrillic script, Polish or French special characters, religious symbols — all possible on request. Just send us the exact desired text, and we will check and confirm.

How do I combine engraving with a SilberVerse card?
In one inquiry. You tell us the occasion, recipient, and wishes; we take care of engraving and SilberVerse in parallel. The engraving is applied to the silver piece, and the card with a longer verse is included in a standard 15×10 cm format in a matching picture frame (silver, white, or black). Both as a free insert with the silver gift — the SilberVerse, the standard frame, and the card itself, all free of charge. Only the engraving on the piece itself is subject to a charge according to the table above.

Which occasions are particularly popular?
Christenings and births are the most common — name, birth date, short dedication. Weddings and silver anniversaries follow — initials plus date, sometimes both first names. Birthdays and company anniversaries with date, logo, or company signature. Less frequent, but regular: remembrance, mourning, encouragement — with a shorter saying.
