In the Russian North, in Veliky Ustyug on the Vologda, stands a manufactory that is the only active center of the ancient Russian niello black art: ZAO "Severnaya Chern" — SevChern. For years, we have sourced pieces directly from this factory and know the people who work there.
In this 8-part series, we take you behind the workshop doors. We show how a SevChern piece is created — step by step, workshop by workshop, person by person. Sources are official factory documentation and manufactory videos. What is written here is not secondhand — it comes directly from the factory.
What you will learn in the 8 articles
A SevChern line like "Astra", "Sakura", or "Reljefnaja" is not an industrial product. It is the collaboration of around 24 specialists working in seven workshops and passing through eight QC inspections before the piece leaves the factory. You will see why a 925 stamp is only half the truth. Why hand engraving cannot be replaced by laser. And why more than half of the workforce spends their entire professional life in the same workshop.
The 8 Secrets — the entire journey of a piece
Secret 1 — The foundation of pure silver
How 999.9 granules and copper become sterling silver 925 that exceeds the legal minimum standard — and who stands at the melting furnace.
Secret 2 — The talent of the artists
Who draws the ornaments before they are transferred to silver — and why no computer can replace an artist like Olga Petrova.
Secret 3 — The mastery of the graver
Why the V-groove of a hand graver is deeper and more precise than any laser cut — and how long Nadezhda Amosova has been working in the engraving workshop.
Secret 4 — The alchemy of niello
How silver sulfide, copper, lead, and sulfur create the black line that doesn't peel — and why it needs 2,000-degree gas flame.
Secret 5 — The completion
990 gold in an electroplating bath, circular grinding, and the triple contrast of gold, mirror silver, and matte niello — the factory's brand signature.
Secret 7 — The heritage and the dynasties
Documented in 1683. Rescued from extinction in 1929. How Mikhail Pavlovich Chirkov preserved the craft — and why it is still alive today.
Secret 9 — The human factor
Sergey Prokshin for 45 years. Alexander Legostaev for 40. Denis Kholopov applies every hallmark. Those who start at SevChern stay — and why that makes all the difference.
Secret 10 — The eye of the master
Seven pairs of eyes inspect each piece after every stage. Those allowed into QC have themselves been producing for decades. This is how "zero defects" are achieved for the end customer.
Workshop Reports — In-depth articles with original pictures
In addition to the 8 secrets, we have 6 workshop reports with original pictures from the manufactory — shorter, illustrated articles on individual aspects of niello art:
- The Kopat step — how the pattern gets into the silver
- Niello icons of saints — tradition and workshop
- How a niello vase is made — illustrated workshop report
- Selective gilding — where gold lies, silver does not tarnish
- From raw blank to mirror shine — the art of polishing
- Workshop atmosphere — still life from Veliky Ustyug
What the secrets do not promise
We have intentionally not added anything that did not originate from the factory itself. No advertising clichés, no comparative advertising, no artificial pathos. What you read has been said by a master at the factory, written in an official factory document, or shown in a factory video. If something in the text is referred to as a secret, it is a secret in the literal sense: knowledge that the manufactory normally keeps behind its doors and that you, as a customer of our shop, can be among the first to read in German.
