In the Russian North, in Veliky Ustyug in Vologda, there is a manufactory that is the only active center of the ancient Russian Niello black art: ZAO "Severnaya Chern" — SevChern. We have been sourcing pieces directly from this factory for years and know the people who work there.
In this 8-part series, we take you behind the workshop doors. We show how a SevChern piece is created — step by step, workshop by workshop, person by person. What the secrets do not promise
We deliberately haven't added anything that doesn't come directly from the factory itself. No advertising clichés, no comparative advertising, no artificial pathos. What you read has been stated by a master in the factory, written in an official factory document, or shown in a factory video. If something in the text is referred to as a secret, it is a secret in the literal sense: knowledge that the manufactory usually keeps behind its doors and that you, as a customer of our shop, can read first in German.
