Niello is one of the oldest finishing techniques for silver. The dark alloy is melted into previously engraved indentations at high temperatures — it fuses with the silver to form an inseparable bond. Unlike applied coatings, niello does not wear off. On the contrary: over time, the silver develops a fine patina that further enhances the contrast with the black niello. This process is rarely practiced in Europe anymore — our pieces come from one of the few workshops that have mastered this technique in over 15 steps.
