Niello Decoration — what is the technique behind it?

Niello is one of the oldest finishing techniques for precious metals. Today, this technique is rarely practiced in Europe. The process begins with an engraving: ornaments are cut by hand into the silver surface. Subsequently, the Niello mass — a black inlay, like ink in silver — is introduced into the indentations and fired at a high temperature. After cooling, the surface is sanded and polished until the dark pattern is flush with the silver.

The result is fundamentally different from a simple engraving or a painted decoration: the Niello ornaments are physically part of the silver. They do not wear off, do not react to moisture, and actually gain contrast over time as the surrounding silver develops a light patina.

Care of Silver Tableware with Niello
