An oval guides the eye differently than a rectangle: it has no corners for the eye to get caught in, and it hugs a face instead of boxing it in. The Saint Michel is such an oval, made of 925 sterling silver, framed by a delicate beaded rim.

The oval shape — made for portraits

The oval is the classic portrait shape. If you want to show a single face, it works better than a rectangle: the frame takes up the curve of the head and softens the edges of the picture. This is precisely why children's portraits were framed in ovals for centuries.

The beaded rim runs as a single fine line around the opening. The rest of the surface remains smooth and curved, allowing the light to run along the edge — an effect that does not exist with a straight frame.

Material and workmanship

925 sterling silver, highly polished, hallmarked. The oval shape is more demanding to produce than the rectangle, because the beaded rim must run evenly around a curve without buckling. Manufactured by Zaramella Argenti in Italy, since 1948.
