The Niello Motif "Waxwing" — Ink in Silver

"Waxwing" (in Russian "Свиристель") is a SevChern line of the Veliky Ustyug niello school. A floral ornamental frieze runs around the belly of the kettle — delicate volutes, foliage, and spirals, inlaid in dark niello and outlined by polished silver lines. The result is a matte-gloss contrast: mirror shine in the surrounding silver, matte black in the niello depressions. This signature is created through a specific polishing phase, where the niello interior remains deliberately matte while the silver is polished.

Niello from Veliky Ustyug — a Tradition since 1683

The Veliky Ustyug niello art has been documented since 1683 and is considered a geographically rooted silversmithing technique — similar to how champagne is tied to its region. The SevChern manufactory (founded in 1933 as Artel Severnaya Chern, today ZAO Severnaya Chern) continues this tradition. Each piece is created in approximately 15 steps, from melting to hand engraving to polishing.
