Description
The set from the most elaborate series of cups: free-standing leaf tips on the cup, a knop on the stem, and a square plate. The manufacturer simply calls it the Square Plate in their catalog—it is the matching base and at the same time a serving plate that remains in use even on ordinary days.

- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Round or square — why a square here
The smaller sets in the line combine a round cup with a round plate. In this series, the plate is square, and this has a structural reason.
The cup stands on a base approximately 12 cm in diameter — significantly wider than the more simply constructed models. A round plate would have to grow accordingly to leave any border; it would become cumbersome. A square provides additional surface area in the corners without appearing larger overall.
Then there is the visual aspect: A round cup on a square base stands out more clearly than round on round. The shape of the bowl becomes more legible.
Two techniques in one set
On the cup, the acanthus leaves at the upper rim detach from the wall and stand freely — a section that can no longer be hammered, but is worked out of thicker material. On the stem sits the knop, the thickened node by which one holds a pedestal vessel; it is entirely chased.
The plate responds to this with four corner volutes — curled acanthus forms that emerge from the surface. Both pieces thus work with the same medium: sculptural relief in the places where the form needs a caesura.
The fifth cup
On the Seder night, four cups of wine stand on the table from which one drinks — for the four promises of liberation. A fifth is filled, but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet whose coming announces the future redemption; toward the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.
The cup is filled to the brim; the fullness stands for abundance of blessing. What spills over is caught by the plate.
Material and origin
The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated ware is twofold for a cup: chasing only succeeds in solid silver — a plating would tear during hammering — and the interior gold-plating protects exactly where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled over decades needs both.
The inside of the cup is gold-plated.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand using punches.
As a gift
For a wedding, when a couple hosts a Seder themselves for the first time. As a joint gift from several givers — the usual way at this price point.
A complete set relieves the recipient of searching for the matching second piece. For a series with such a distinct design language, this is worth more than with simpler models: a plate that matches this cup is not found by chance.
Engraving
On the cup, the smooth base edge of approx. 12 cm remains available; on the plate, the central surface and the underside. For sets, usually only one part is engraved. An engraving is possible after inspection; we will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will enclose a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside of the cup. No dishwasher. Work carefully around the free-standing leaf tips; hold the cup by the knop or base, not by the rim. A soft brush is suitable for the recesses. Frequently asked questions
Are both parts included in the delivery?
Yes — the cup with knop, approx. 28.5 cm and the square plate, approx. 24x24 cm. Both parts are also available individually.
Why is the plate square?
The cup base measures approx. 12 cm. A square provides additional surface in the corners without appearing larger overall — and visually highlights the round bowl more strongly.
Are the protruding leaf tips delicate?
Not in normal use. When carrying and cleaning, grasp the cup by the knop or base.
Is the set kosher?
We carry silver utensils and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal advice. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your community.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
Cup and plate viewed individually
This set consists of the cup with knop, approx. 28.5 cm and the square plate, approx. 24x24 cm. The manufacturer lists both under one base number; in the catalog, the plate is simply called Square Plate.
This explains why it comes without inscriptions or religious symbols: it is intended as a base and serving plate at the same time. Whoever buys the set receives a piece that remains in use even on ordinary days.
With gold-plated ornament, the same combination is available as a partially gold-plated set, and one size larger as a Jumbo set.
The square plate makes this set the most practical in the range: it remains in use between holidays — as a serving platter, as a coaster, as a tray on the sideboard. The cup stands next to it in the display case. This way, neither of the two parts disappears into the cupboard for eleven months.
