Description

This plate was not designed for itself, but as the second half of a pair: it bears the same scrolling foliage as the acanthus goblet, and the manufacturer lists both under one model number. Anyone who only has one of the two will notice it — the motifs interlock.

At a Glance

  • Plate for the Eliyahu goblet made of 925 sterling silver
  • Diameter approx. 25 cm — silver weight approx. 0.35 kg
  • Chiseled ring of acanthus leaves
  • Smooth mirror as goblet stand, smooth outer rim
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacturer since 1948

Why goblet and plate bear the same motif

With silver objects, the coordination of individual pieces is the real art. A goblet bears its ornament on a curved surface that tapers upwards; a plate on a flat ring. The same motif must work on both shapes without appearing distorted.

The acanthus is particularly suitable for this. The serrated leaf can be stretched, bent and intertwined without appearing unnatural — which is why it has been a part of European ornamentation since antiquity. On the goblet it rises, on the plate it runs in a circle; you can recognize the same signature.

If you combine goblets and plates from different series, you won't get this interplay.

What is a plate for?

The Cup of Elijah is filled to the brim at the Seder. What overflows is caught by the plate and kept off the tablecloth.

Even more important is its second task: on a full Seder table — with symbolic foods, glasses, candles, and the Haggadah in front of each place — the plate gives the cup its own space. It makes it visible that something stands here that does not belong to the other dishes.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks — for the four promises of liberation. A fifth is filled, but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet whose coming announces future redemption; towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.

The plate holds this cup — the piece that remains filled throughout the evening.

Material and Origin

A silver-plated piece could not be made like this at all — the coating tears under the punch. And it cannot be re-polished indefinitely because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handwork during creation and the care over generations. The piece is hallmarked.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chiseled — hammered into the silver by hand with punches. No section of the ring repeats the previous one exactly; this is how you recognize the handwork.

As a Supplement

Eliyahu goblets are passed down through generations — the plate is often missing. A separately available plate is therefore a gift for someone who already has the main piece.

It complements without replacing. And it fits common goblet bases, even if the goblet comes from another source.

Engraving

The smooth outer rim remains visible even when the cup is placed on it — it is the intended engraving surface. A name, a date, or a Hebrew line can be placed there. We advise you in advance on line spacing and size. On request, we include a SilberVerse card , 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the indentations between the leaves. Wipe off wine residues promptly. Tarnishing is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth between the leaves may remain, it makes the relief plastic. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a matching goblet?

Yes — the Acanthus Goblet with approx. 23.5 cm. It bears the same foliage and comes from the same model series. Both parts are ordered individually.

Will another goblet fit on it?

At approx. 25 cm diameter, a standard goblet base will fit. For a particularly wide base, we will gladly check the measurements beforehand.

Can I use the plate for other purposes?

Yes. It holds pastries or fruit and serves as a tray.

Is it kosher?

We sell silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal information. Questions about ritual suitability can be answered by your community.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality manufacturer's packaging.

The second part of a pair

This plate was designed for a specific goblet: the Acanthus Goblet with approx. 23.5 cm. Both bear the same scrolling foliage, and the manufacturer lists both under one model number. If you want the complete pair, you order two items — there is no pre-bundled set here.

Other plates in the line are more smoothly crafted, such as the plate with approx. 25 cm in the same diameter. The acanthus is the more ornate choice.

Even without a goblet, it is not a half-piece. A chiseled silver plate of this size holds pastries, carries fruit, lies on a sideboard — and the foliage on the rim makes it an object that you look at, not just use.
