Niello Embellishment — What's Behind the Technique?

Niello is one of the oldest finishing techniques for precious metals. In Europe, this technique is now rarely practiced. The process begins with an engraving: ornaments are hand-cut into the silver surface. Subsequently, the niello mass — an alloy of silver, copper, and sulfur — is applied to the depressions and fired at a high temperature. After cooling, the surface is ground and polished until the dark pattern is flush with the silver.

The result differs fundamentally from a simple engraving or a painted decoration: the niello ornaments are physically part of the silver. They do not wear off, do not react to moisture, and even gain contrast over time as the surrounding silver develops a slight patina.

Care for Silverware with Niello
