Why nine arms

Hanukkah is celebrated for eight nights, and a light is added each night. So, eight lights – the ninth arm holds the shamash, with which the others are lit. It is not counted among them and is therefore elevated.

This distinguishes a Hanukkiah from the menorah, which has seven arms and refers to the Temple candelabrum. The number is the sole distinguishing feature, and it can be recounted in seconds in any photo.

What "Small" means here

The manufacturer offers this model as a smaller version of the large Hanukkiah of approx. 76 cm. Identical in construction means: the same round base, the same concentric arm arrangement, the same leaf cuffs on the arches – just reduced in scale.

Eleven centimeters less in height and seven less in width may sound like little. On a windowsill, they determine whether the piece stands centrally or bumps against the frame. Measuring before buying is more worthwhile here than with any other piece in the line.

The place at the window

The custom of Pirsumei Nisa — publicizing the miracle — requires that the lights be visible from the outside. Therefore, a Hanukkiah is placed at the window or near the door, not on the dining table.

This also shapes how it is seen for the rest of the year: It usually remains where it stood for Hanukkah. A silver candelabrum on the windowsill catches daylight from two sides — the polished arches brighter, the chased areas darker. As an object in front of a window, this piece works year-round.

Candles and wax

Standard size stick candles; for oil, glass inserts are available in specialized shops. To remove wax residue, briefly cool the piece — then the wax can be lifted off without scratching. No knives, no hard edges: silver is softer than steel.

Engraving

Care

By hand, with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher — cleaning salts attack silver. Use a soft brush for the chasing on the base, and a narrow cloth for the arches.
