A wreath of fully bloomed sunflowers in black niello encircles the belly of the carafe, with petals meticulously carved individually, seeds engraved as a fine grid, and framed by delicate vines. The sunflower represents heliotropism — the ability to turn towards the sun — and has been regarded for centuries as a symbol of gratitude and devotion. As the only distinctly summer-themed motif in our carafe collection, it brings a bright, joyful note to the table.

Material and workmanship

In the niello technique, grooves are engraved into the silver and subsequently filled with a dark sulfur alloy. This compound bonds chemically with the silver — no stickers, no varnish, and no paint that can peel off. The black color is permanently embedded in the metal and improves with time: every polish deepens the contrast between the bright silver and deep black. The carafe is crafted at the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where up to 15 manual steps go into a single piece — shaping, soldering, grinding, engraving, inlaying, firing, and polishing.

Usage and occasions

480 ml is the ideal size for a table set for two or four — not a display object, but a table pitcher for water, juice, or wine. The open spout without a lid is quicker to reach for than a carafe with a stopper, and the S-handle fits comfortably in the hand. As a gift, the sunflower carafe is particularly suitable for moments celebrating joy and warmth: a milestone birthday, Mother's Day, a housewarming, or a summer gift that can grace the table all winter long.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

Above and below the sunflower frieze, the smooth silver surface offers space for a personal engraving — a date, a name, or a short sentence. Engraving is possible upon review; simply let us know what you would like when ordering. Upon request, we can include a personal SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm photo format — custom-designed, suited to the occasion, and free of charge.

Care

Clean with a soft cloth and a mild silver polish. Do not use silver dip baths, as these can damage the niello inlays. Occasional polishing preserves the shine and, over time, deepens the contrast between the bright silver and the black niello.

Frequently asked questions

Is 925 sterling silver really genuine silver?
Yes. 925 means 92.5% fine silver, the internationally recognized standard for silver tableware.

What is niello — and how does it differ from enamel?
Niello is an inlay technique: a dark sulfur alloy is melted into engraved grooves and bonds chemically with the silver. Enamel, on the other hand, is molten glass in vibrant colors that adheres to the surface.

How do I care for a silver carafe with niello?
With a soft cloth and a mild silver polish. Do not use a dip bath, as this can damage the niello inlays.
