Material and Craftsmanship

The medallion on this goblet features a stylized lotus flower set in a diamond-shaped cartouche. In Russian silver ornamentation, the lotus is not a foreign element—since the 18th century, it has represented purity and perfection and is part of the classic repertoire of niello art. Each petal line is engraved into the silver by hand, and the characteristic black niello is then melted in by flame, ground flush, and polished—like ink in silver, not lacquer. The golden background behind the blossom gives the motif depth, as if the lotus were floating before a warm light. To the left and right of the medallion, dense floral tendrils move across the bowl, symmetrically composed yet lively in their line work. On the foot, a narrow niello band repeats the ornamental theme on a smaller scale. The inside of the goblet is fully plated with fine gold, as are the rim and the edge of the foot—ensuring it imparts no metallic taste.

With a capacity of approx. 175 ml, this is not a glass for a quick gulp, but a volume that allows a red wine to breathe, concentrates a dessert wine, and does not drown a liqueur. Care

Clean by hand with lukewarm water and a mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid the dishwasher and harsh cleaners or abrasive agents, as they can damage the gold plating and the niello surface. A silver polishing cloth maintains the shine of the polished areas. Over time, the contrast between the silver, gold, and niello black will visibly deepen with polishing—this does not make the goblet duller, but rather more expressive.
