Material and Workmanship

Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is inlaid into previously hand-engraved ornaments and permanently fused with the silver – not a lacquer, not an applied color layer, but a chemical-physical bond that withstands the material. Before a single piece is finished, it undergoes more than 15 steps: casting, grinding, hand-engraving, the application and firing of the niello mass, renewed grinding and polishing, until only the dark filling remains visible in the depressions. This is followed by the partial gilding of the rabbit motif – gold, strategically placed to make the figure glow warmly. This spoon is manufactured by the SevChern manufactory, which is one of the last workshops in Europe that still masters this technique in such depth. Care

Niello silver requires gentle care to preserve the dark ornaments and gilding in the long term. Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dips – they can attack the niello filling and damage the gilding. For the polished silver surfaces, a soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient if needed. The spoon is not dishwasher safe. Slight signs of wear on the polished surfaces develop over time into a natural patina that gives the spoon character – the niello ornaments themselves remain untouched and permanently preserved. Store the spoon dry, preferably wrapped in a soft cloth, and avoid contact with rubber, sulfur, or salty substances.
