Material and Workmanship

The body of the pitcher remains matte, satin-finished 925 silver, without gold on the outer wall. A wide niello band with large lotus blossoms runs around the belly area – multi-part flower heads with dense leaves and tendrils, embedded in the classic plant pattern of the Veliky Ustyug school. Each line was engraved into the silver with a graver before the black niello alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur was introduced into the depressions, fired, and polished. What emerges is insoluble – part of the metal, not applied. The gilding is purposefully placed where the hand touches the piece and the eye first looks: the fully gilded handle, the gilded rim, the gilded spout, and the fully gilded interior. This triad of warm gold, niello black, and matte silver is a deliberate composition – each tone highlights the others. The lotus blossom itself has always symbolized purity and renewal, a motif that fits well as a gift for a new beginning.

Care

Hand wash only with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. No dishwasher, no silver dip – both will damage the gilding. Never treat the gilded surfaces on the handle, rim, and interior with abrasive cleaners. The niello band is melted in and permanent; normal cleaning will not harm it. You can gently refresh the matte silver body with a soft silver polishing cloth. Store in the gift box.
