Material and Workmanship

The jug from the Souverän collection has an exceptionally squat, almost spherical proportion – a deliberate design decision that immediately makes it recognizable as a standalone piece alongside the teapot, although both bear the same ornamentation. Three elements work together on the body: The niello sits in the engraved tendrils and in the background of the double-headed eagle medallion, deep black and chemically bonded to the silver. The gilded background of the ornamental areas and the handle provide a warm gold contrast, while the polished silver base ring at the foot completes the composition at the bottom. The spout is pointed and geometric, positioned directly at the top edge – not a curved beak, but a precise spout for controlled pouring. The handle ends at the top in a delicate volute, a detail that comes from Russian imperial silverware of the 18th and 19th centuries.
