Material and workmanship

The Merchant is made of solid 925 sterling silver in a boat shape with a bail handle and a round base. The outside is matted and features a circumferential niello band with acanthus leaves and floral tendrils in a classic ornamental style – deep black on matte silver. The bail handle remains deliberately simple and unengraved, a calm counterpoint to the decorated body. The interior is highly polished and creates a clear contrast to the matted outer surface. Niello is a millennia-old technique in which a black silver alloy is melted into engraved depressions, forming a permanent, chemical-physical bond with the base silver.

Use and occasions

With 40 ml, the Merchant is intended for individual portions at a place setting – for example, two to three spoons of hollandaise, a portion of crème fraîche with salmon, a caviar sauce, or a dressing for your own plate. Instead of one large gravy boat for the whole table, this concept provides each guest with their own small vessel – practical for a festive dinner where different sauces are to be served with the same course. As a set of four or six pieces, the Merchant makes a special wedding or anniversary gift for people who appreciate a thoughtfully set table.

Care

Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild dish soap – no dishwasher, no silver dip. The niello band is melted in and permanent; normal cleaning will not harm it. Clean the matted outer surface with a soft cloth, without abrasive cleaners. If necessary, you can refresh the polished interior with a silver polishing cloth.
