Material and Workmanship

What distinguishes the Botanica collection from pure niello services is the gilding. It is not applied as a flat coating on the silver, but precisely where it is seen and felt: The handle of the cup rests golden in the hand, the rim where the lip touches is golden, the interior of the milk jug, which the guest sees when pouring, is also golden. In between lies the niello ornamental band, deep black on matted silver. This triad of warm gold, deep black, and calm matte silver is the result of three techniques that come together on each individual piece: gilding, the niello fusion process, and the matting of the base silver. Niello itself is not a modern finishing technique, but a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions, fired at high temperature, and forms a chemical bond with the base silver – insoluble, permanent, without coating. Each piece of this service undergoes at least 15 individual work steps in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where this technique has been practiced since the 17th century.

Care

Hand wash only with lukewarm water and mild dish soap — no dishwasher, no silver dip, as both will damage the gilding. You should never treat the gilded areas on handles, rims, and inner areas with abrasive cleaners. The niello band is permanently fused and will not be damaged by normal cleaning. Refresh the matted surfaces with a soft silver polishing cloth. Between occasions, it is best to store the service in its gift case.
