The dragon is crafted using the niello technique – niello is a black inlay that is melted into engraved lines, ground flush, and polished, like ink in silver; not a varnish or coating, but a permanent bond with the material itself. The dragon's body winds in a curve across the image field, with scales individually worked out, claws and whiskers finely drawn, and two stylized clouds above. The motif is set in a rectangular frame with a surrounding leaf-tendril border, which gives the image a clear, almost graphic character. The hip flask itself is made of solid 925 sterling silver.
