Material and Workmanship

Niello is a metal alloy made of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur. The motif is hand-engraved into the silver, the heated niello mass is placed into the indentations, and the surface is then ground flush with the polished silver. This creates an image that is part of the metal itself — not an application, no layer of paint. At the transition from handle to stem, there is also a cloverleaf ornament that gives the spoon its own character there too. The spoon is made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, one of the most important centers of Russian silver processing since the 17th century — niello work from the region has been documented since 1683.

Use and Occasions

Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap, a soft cloth is sufficient for drying. No dishwasher, no aggressive cleaning agents or dipping baths. A light tarnishing layer on the silver surface can be removed with a silver polishing cloth — the niello itself does not change color or depth in the process.
