Description

On the front of this silver cup is a small boy. He wears a jacket, his hands rest in front of his body, his head slightly tilted — a quiet, almost reverent posture. No coat of arms, no crown, no enamel color. Just pure 925 sterling silver, which raises this figure from the wall of the cup.

The motif is no coincidence and no modern invention. It draws on a tradition that has lived in European silversmithing since the Baroque: children's figures as a baptismal motif — then called "Putti", today simply "the boy" or "the girl". What used to be reserved for nobility and the church is now intended for every christening child.

The little boy — who is he?

The figure is deliberately general. Not a specific person, but a type: the young man at rest, with clothing reminiscent of the late 19th century — jacket with lapels, calm pose. This is the idea of the relief: not to show a specific child, but an image into which every family, every christening can project itself.

The silhouette is carved out of the silver — plastic, with fine transitions in the jacket and the facial contour. The light plays with the relief: From one angle the boy is almost three-dimensional, from another he becomes a silhouette. A silver cup that wanders with the light in the room.

Putti — the tradition behind the motif

Since the Baroque, child figures have appeared on baptismal tasks: as putti in painting, as relief children on silver cups, later as sentimental Biedermeier motifs. The idea behind it: childhood is a sacred moment — and the image of a child on a piece of silver carries this sanctity further. Today, this symbolism has softened: no religious compulsion, but the quiet gesture remains.

Whoever gives this cup as a gift cites a 300-year-old European children's silver tradition — without explicitly naming it. The motif speaks for itself.

As a counterpart to the girl's cup

The boy has a direct counterpart in the same line: the Children's Cup "Girl" (SW10767). There stands a small girl with a dress and pigtails. The two together form a pair — same shape, same handle, mirror-image figures. A harmonious double for twin baptisms or for families with two children.

Engraving on the back

Front figure, back engraving. Name and baptism date are common — but with this motif, a baptismal verse also works particularly well ("Grow, little man"), or the date alone in large print as a lasting sign. Please contact us briefly before ordering, we will advise on placement and font. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse with the gift — a handwritten poem for the christening.

Not to be confused with the Prince's Cup

The collection has a second boy's cup — the Prince's Cup (SW10774) with blue enamel and gold coat of arms. Where the prince relies on heraldry and color, the boy remains in pure silver. Two tonalities, same line — the prince loud and representative, the boy quiet and figurative.
