Silver as a heat conductor

Silver is the best heat conductor of all metals—it transfers heat many times faster than glass. The snifter therefore adapts to the temperature of its surroundings faster than a glass.

When taken from a cold cupboard, it should be held in the hand for a moment before pouring.

Gold-plated interior

Gold is tasteless and does not react with anything. In the case of spirits, this is the very reason for the gold-plated interior—it keeps the taste of the metal away from the drink. For a distillate that has spent decades in a barrel, anything else would be unacceptable.

What you sacrifice is the color. If you want to see the amber hue of your cognac in the glass, stick to glass. If you want to smell and taste it, this piece offers the advantage.

Material

A drinking vessel that is held in the hand often makes a specific demand: It is not just polished; it is constantly touched. Plating on a base metal wears off exactly where the fingers grip the stem—with solid silver, this cannot happen because there is nothing to wear off but silver.

Best suited for

For cognac, Armagnac, brandy, and aged wine spirits. Also for whisky, if you drink it neat—the shape concentrates the aroma just as effectively.

Care

Clean by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use a dishwasher. Do not use silver polish on the gold-plated interior—it will damage the gold layer; rinsing and drying is sufficient there. You may polish the exterior.
