Material and Craftsmanship

The carafe is the centerpiece of the set: the body tapers upwards to a narrow neck, the handle sweeps in an elegant curve, and the lid closes with a hinge and bears a flower petal as a knob. The niello blossoms are generous and open-worked — they have space on the wide surface of the body rather than being compressed into a dense band. Individual floral compositions are scattered across the polished silver surface, more like flowers in a garden than a continuous decorative strip.

The glasses in the set bear the same blossom niello as the carafe — not copied identically, but in the same hand: the same blossom shape, the same engraving style, the same ratio between ornament and polished silver. The niello inlay is hand-engraved and the dark compound is then fused into place — a permanent bond with the silver, not a lacquer. The set is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where the art of niello has been documented since 1683.

Usage and Occasions

1,100 ml capacity is sufficient for a smaller table setting — for water or wine at a festive dinner, where the carafe, with its weight of approx. 1,269 g, develops a palpable presence on the table. Care

Clean by hand with lukewarm water and mild dish soap; do not put in the dishwasher. Do not scrub the niello surfaces; a soft cloth is sufficient for daily use. With occasional polishing with a silver polishing cloth, the contrast between the silver and niello deepens over time.
