Corkscrew Rooster 925 Silver in Case — antique patinated

A corkscrew made of 925 sterling silver, whose handle features two roosters in a cockfight — chest to chest, plumage raised, placed opposite one another on a rustic forked branch. The motif originates from the Russian genre and folk tradition, in which the cockfight is a classic peasant scene. Anyone who picks up this corkscrew is not holding a mere tool, but a small scene with character.

Material and craftsmanship

The material is 925 sterling silver, i.e., 92.5% fine silver. Both roosters and the forked branch platform feature an antique patina: a thin, superficial blackening remains visible in the recesses between the feathers, in the folds of the beaks, and around the eyes, while the high points are polished to a shine. This makes the plumage stand out three-dimensionally, with every feather remaining recognizable. This blackening is not paint, lacquer, or coloring — nor is it niello. Niello is a different technique involving molten sulfur-silver paste in engraved depressions. Here, it is a surface coating that also acts as a protective layer against further uncontrolled tarnishing. If necessary, the high points can be carefully polished with a soft silver cloth, while the recesses retain their depth. The worm-style spiral is classically shaped and well-suited for both modern and vintage natural corks.

Use and occasions

The cockfight corkscrew is suitable for occasions where wine, tradition, and a motif with history come together: as a substantial gift for men for a milestone birthday, retirement, or business anniversary; as a wedding anniversary gift for couples with a shared wine ritual; or for wine connoisseurs and collectors who, alongside carafes and decanters, also appreciate bar accessories with a folk connection. The piece is also suitable as a host gift for hosts and amateur chefs with an appreciation for Russian dining tradition.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

Care

Wipe dry after use; do not put in the dishwasher. If there are wine residues on the spiral, rinse briefly with lukewarm water and dry immediately. The included case is suitable for storage, ideally with an anti-tarnish strip. Tarnish marks on the high points can be removed with a soft silver polishing cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sculpture really show two roosters?

Yes, there are two distinct roosters, both fully modeled, opposite each other on a shared forked-branch platform — with two heads, two beaks, and individual plumage.

Is the blackening the same as niello?

No. Niello is a molten sulfur-silver paste in engraved depressions. This is a superficial antique patina that serves as a protective layer and remains visible as dark areas in the relief recesses.

Is an engraving possible?

No. This piece cannot be engraved; as a personal addition, we offer a complimentary SilberVerse card.
