Why there is a knot on the stem

The thickening in the middle of the stem is called a node and originates from medieval chalice construction. It is not just decorative: It provides the hand with a secure grip point without having to touch the bowl. With a chilled drink, this is exactly what matters — every finger on the bowl warms the contents.

The gold-plated interior

Sparkling wine, champagne, and wine are acidic. The interior is gold-plated, so the drink does not come into contact with silver. This way, you drink from gold and hold silver in your hand. On the outside, the piece remains ungilded silver.

Why the bowl is conical

A champagne flute tapers downwards so that the carbonation has a long way to travel upwards — the higher the column, the longer it sparkles. With silver, you cannot see this, but you can taste it: The shape influences how quickly a sparkling wine goes flat, regardless of whether the vessel is transparent. The narrow opening also keeps the aroma above the liquid.
