Material and workmanship

The niello hand engraving shows the stag in a diamond-shaped cartouche with a golden background. Floral scrollwork flows in niello-black to the left and right, and the theme is repeated on the base in a narrow ornamental band with a golden base ring. Niello is a centuries-old silver inlay technique: fine indentations are worked into the silver and filled with niello — a black compound that is fused into the engraved lines, ground flat, and polished — like ink in silver. The goblet is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia, in around 15 work steps. The goblet shares its shape and dimensions with the other motifs in the 175 ml line and can be combined with them.
