The double beaded rod — an ancient motif

The beaded rod is one of the oldest ornamental elements in European silversmithing; it can be found on Roman vessels as well as on 19th-century silverware. Its effect lies in its rhythm: A series of uniform hemispheres breaks the light at regular intervals and provides support for a smooth surface.

On the Rome, it runs double and encloses the curved central surface like a clasp. This gives the frame depth — it looks constructed, not stamped out.

Material and workmanship

925 sterling silver, highly polished, hallmarked. The curve between the rows of beads is the actual craftsmanship involved: It must run evenly along its entire length, otherwise the reflection will show waves. Manufactured by Zaramella Argenti in Italy, since 1948.
