Peter the Great on horseback, high on a granite block, the animal rearing on its hind legs: The Bronze Horseman in St. Petersburg's Senate Square is one of Russia's most famous monuments, also immortalized in literature since Alexander Pushkin's verse epic of 1833. The "Bronze Horseman antique patinated" teaglass holder set features the equestrian statue sculpturally in the central medallion of a Podstakannik made of 925 sterling silver. It also includes a classic table teaspoon and a diamond-cut crystal glass, united in a velvet-lined premium case.

Material and Workmanship

The holder features the same classical column structure as the other emblem sets in our line: stirrup handle with pearl rim, acanthus volutes, laurel wreath with bow in the central medallion. The equestrian statue of Peter the Great is sculpturally integrated there – the rider on the rearing horse, with the rock plinth indicated under the hooves. The recesses of the relief are patinated in an antique style, while the raised surfaces remain polished, making the composition appear deeper and more sculptural. The accompanying teaspoon is deliberately kept simple: an elegant sterling silver handle with an oval end and subtle acanthus decorations at the neck, highly polished bowl – calmer in design than the "Imperator" or "Edinstvo" spoons in other sets, so that the emblem on the holder remains the focus. The diamond-cut crystal glass "Tschajny" with a cut geometric pattern is a replaceable consumable item and can be replaced if necessary. The blackening is a superficial patination and differs from Niello, the sulfur-silver inlay technique of the SevChern manufactory. A gilded version of the medallion is available on request, and we also offer the holder as a solo variant with a teaglass, but without a spoon and case.

Care

Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth – never in the dishwasher, never rub off the blackening in the recesses with silver polish. After use, wipe dry and store in the case, which protects against air contact and slows down natural tarnishing. For heavier tarnishing of polished surfaces, a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive particles can be used on the raised areas, never in the blackened recesses. The diamond-cut glass is dishwasher-safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing is gentler and keeps it clearer.

In Russian, it is literally called the "Copper Horseman," because in the 19th century, bronze was often colloquially referred to as copper. Pushkin used this common expression at the time; in German, "Bronzener Reiter" (Bronze Horseman) and "Eherner Reiter" (Iron Horseman) have both become established.

Is the blackening the same as Niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique, typical for SevChern from Veliky Ustyug. The blackening used here is a superficial patination in the recesses.
