Description
Description
If the sound of three galloping horses in the snow makes you think of something profoundly Russian—of sleigh bells, runners, fir trees, a starry sky, and a long road that never ends—then the troika is not just an image for you, but a sound. Our "Troika" teaglass holder set from ArgentA captures precisely this sound in sculptural silver high relief: three horses at a flying gallop, sleigh passengers, a forest, a church tower on the horizon—and in your hands, a hot glass of tea.
The 3-piece set combines a 925 sterling silver podstakannik with traditional blackening (antique patination), a classic diamond-pattern crystal glass, and a "Prestige" teaspoon with an initial cartouche for engraving. Everything rests in a velvet-lined premium navy blue case—ready for a grand gift gesture.
Symbolic for Weddings
Three Horses, One Shared Path
The Russian troika was traditionally the wedding team with bells on the shaft bow—an image for the shared journey of life. Discover all wedding anniversary gifts made of 925 silver.

The troika is more than just a carriage team. Since the 18th century, it has been perhaps the most Russian of all Russian images: three horses side-by-side in front of a sleigh, the middle horse in a high trot under the shaft-bow harness, the two outer horses in a flat gallop. Invented for the endless distances between Moscow and St. Petersburg, the troika became a mail coach, a wedding carriage, a symbol of Russia itself.
Nikolai Gogol immortalized it. At the end of "Dead Souls" (1842), he addresses Russia as a bird-troika: "Ah, troika! Bird-troika, who invented you?" Tchaikovsky composed his famous piano piece "November - On the Troika" from The Seasons for it. Painters like Nikolai Sverchkov, Alexei Stepanov, and Pyotr Sokolov captured it countless times—mostly in the snow, often with churches on the horizon, always with that yearning gesture for vastness.
Precisely this imagery is sculpturally rendered on your podstakannik: three horses at full speed, a sleigh box with travelers, a pine forest on the left, a church tower silhouette on the right, snow under their hooves. Not niello inlay, but high relief in silver, its depressions antiqued by blackening. This makes the scene appear three-dimensional—the horses truly seem to fly.
What's in the Composition?
Three pieces, three characters—and together they form the classic Russian tea ritual:
- Podstakannik "Troika": 925 silver, height approx. 95 mm, approx. 237 g. Complete body with circumferential Troika high relief, polished domed base, classic loop handle with pearl rim and acanthus volutes. Depressions antiqued, raised areas polished—the scene glows in alternating light and dark.
- Crystal Glass "Chayny" (Diamond): Classic Russian teaglass, approx. 250 ml, 65 × 110 mm. Cut diamond pattern—the geometric refraction makes the tea in the cup sparkle warm and amber. The glass is a replaceable consumable, easily interchangeable or replaceable.
- Teaspoon "Prestige": 925 silver, approx. 148 mm, approx. 40 g. Classic sterling silver style—oval initial cartouche in a rocaille frame at the handle end, acanthus decoration at the neck, highly polished bowl. The empty cartouche field is ideal for a personal initial engraving.
All three pieces are presented in a premium navy blue case with velvet lining. The case is not just packaging, but a permanent storage place—protecting silver from air contact and tarnishing.
Blackening is not Niello — An Important ArgentA Signature
You will read two terms in Russian silver markets that are often confused: Niello and Чернение (Cherneniye, "blackening"). They are not the same.
Niello is an inlay technique—a fused sulfur-silver alloy that is filled into engraved silver like a second material and then planed flush. Niello black is deep, lustrous, often inky, and sits flush. Famous for this: SevChern from Veliky Ustyug, which we carry in our Niello assortment.
Blackening à la ArgentA is a superficial patination—a controlled, applied protective and accent layer of silver sulfide. It emphasizes depressions and 3D structures, making high reliefs like the Troika dramatically stand out. The raised surfaces are polished bright after blackening. The result is warm, sculptural, and very photogenic—different from niello, but equally beautiful for sculptural scenes.
In this set, you can see the ArgentA effect perfectly: the horses' manes, sleigh runners, and fir tree tops are deeply blackened; the horses' bodies, snow edges, and church silhouettes shine silvery.
When is the Troika Particularly Suitable?
- Wedding Gift: The troika was traditionally the Russian wedding team (with bells on the shaft bow). Symbolically: three paths, one goal—a shared life journey.
- Russian Aficionados, Slavistics, Diplomacy: Few gifts are as unambiguously "Russia" as a troika. For language, literature, and culture connoisseurs.
- Horse Lovers, Breeding, Trotting Races: Three horses at a flying gallop—a statement gift for anyone whose heart belongs to horses.
- Winter Birthdays, Christmas, New Year's Eve: The snow scene makes the set a perfect winter gift. Every sip of tea feels like a sleigh ride.
- Anniversary, Board Member, Embassy Gift: Classic premium sterling silver with an iconic motif and engravable cartouche.
- Collectors of Russian Silver Art: A classic of the ArgentA line, gift-ready in its case—also as an extension to a podstakannik collection.
How to Showcase the Set
The Russian tea ritual means: strong black tea from a samovar, with sugar or a piece of honeycomb, often with a slice of lemon. Brew the tea as a concentrate (savarka), pour it into the diamond-pattern glass, and top up with hot water. The holder remains cool enough to grip, the glass retains the heat—a technical classic that has not changed since the Tsarist era.
For visual appeal: Position the holder so that the troika remains visible from the front. The tea in the diamond-pattern glass refracts the light and further enhances the high relief.
Care — Let Silver Live
925 Sterling silver lives with you. The ArgentA blackening is intentionally present as a protective layer in the depressions and is value-determining—it creates the 3D effect. Treat the set accordingly:
- Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth—never in the dishwasher, never rub away the blackening in the grooves with silver polish.
- Wipe dry after use, preferably store in the case—this protects against air contact and delays natural tarnishing.
- Diamond-pattern glass: dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle; hand washing is gentler and results in a clearer shine.
- For heavier tarnishing of polished surfaces: use a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive particles on the raised areas, never in the blackened depressions.
Comparison: Troika vs. Hunting Sets vs. Perov Set
We carry several ArgentA tea sets side-by-side. Which one suits whom?
- Troika (this set): Russian national symbol, three horses, winter sleigh. For Russian aficionados, horse lovers, weddings, winter gifts. The most classic choice, broadly appealing.
- Capercaillie Hunt: Big game scene on the holder, sculptural capercaillie figure as spoon finial. For hunters, St. Hubert brothers, game hunting enthusiasts.
- Hunters at Rest (Perov): High relief based on Vasily Perov's 1871 painting (Tretyakov Gallery). For art connoisseurs and hunters alike—the art-historical variant.
All three sets use the same premium "Prestige" spoon with an engravable initial cartouche and the same diamond-pattern crystal glass—but each with a different holder featuring its own imagery.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Troika
Is blackening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique (e.g., SevChern from Veliky Ustyug) where black paste is melted into engravings. ArgentA blackening is a superficial patination in the depressions that enhances the 3D effect of high reliefs. Both processes are high-quality but differ in technique, appearance, and care.
Why three horses—what does the troika mean?
Since the 18th century, the troika has been the Russian mail coach team: three horses side-by-side in front of a sleigh, the middle one in a high trot, the outer ones in a gallop. It became a symbol of Russia itself—through Gogol ("Bird-Troika"), Tchaikovsky ("November - On the Troika"), and countless painters.
Can I have the spoon engraved?
Yes—the initial cartouche at the handle end is deliberately left blank and is ideal for one to three initials or a family crest. We recommend hand engraving by a silversmith so that the line work matches the other embellishments.
Is the set dishwasher safe?
No, not the silver components. Please clean the holder and spoon only by hand, never in the dishwasher. The diamond-pattern crystal glass is robust and dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle—but hand washing is gentler here too.
How does the blackening behave over time?
The blackening is in the depressions and is intentional—it is not dirt, but part of the design. With normal care, it remains stable for many years. The polished surfaces may tarnish slightly; this can be remedied in seconds with a soft silver cloth.
Can I replace the glass if it breaks?
Yes—the Russian diamond-pattern teaglass (approx. 250 ml, inner diameter approx. 65 mm) is a standard size and can be reordered from specialist retailers or from us. This is precisely what the Russian podstakannik design is for.
Who designed the "Troika" holder?
The holder is a classic of the ArgentA Classic line. Posuda from Kolchugino (Vladimir Oblast). The scene is a genre composition in the style of 19th-century Russian horse painters (Sverchkov school), not a specific signed original motif.
Is the Troika also suitable for women's gifts?
Absolutely. Unlike the hunting sets, the Troika is gender-neutral and particularly beautiful for weddings, engagements, or anniversaries—symbolically: a shared journey. Also very popular in Slavistic and literary studies.
