Niello instead of enamel — the technique behind the set

Niello is a black inlay that is melted into previously hand-engraved lines, ground flat, and polished – like ink in silver. The SevChern (ZAO Severnaya Chern) manufactory polishes the piece in several stages until the dark lines stand out in high contrast against the polished silver. This Veliky Ustyug tradition has been documented since 1683 — unlike enamel or oxidation, Niello is not a coating, but is firmly bonded to the silver. On the spoon, this is shown as a figurative saint with a halo, on the medallion as a guardian angel relief, and on the cross as a christogram.

Only wipe the textile christening cord dry.
