Material and Workmanship

The swan is made entirely of 925 sterling silver. The neck curves elegantly forward, the head bears a gilded crown with a blue stone, and the beak is also gilded. Openwork can be seen on the wing edges — a filigree pattern of vines and flowers that allows light to pass through. This silver lace gives the wings a lightness that lends the swan its grace.

The body is adorned with niello hand-engraving: floral medallions on the sides, dense tendril ornaments on the belly, plus gilded contours that add depth to the flowers. In the niello technique, a dark silver alloy is melted into the engraved lines — not a print, not a coating, but part of the silver itself. The blue cabochon stones are set as eyes, on the body, and at the base of the wings, adding a fourth color to the black, silver, and gold spectrum, reminiscent of water. The piece is crafted at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, one of the traditional centers of Russian niello art.
