Salad bowl 925 silver Niello 1450 ml

Some table pieces wait to be filled. This salad bowl, however, changes the way the entire table looks. Its wavy rim—eight curved lobes that fan out upwards like an open seashell—gives the solid 925 sterling silver a silhouette that remains recognizable from any distance. Beneath it, a deep niello band featuring chrysanthemum ornamentation runs around the matte wall: calm, clear, without any high-gloss clamor.

Material and workmanship

This bowl is the only piece in the entire SevChern niello line with a wavy lobed rim—a design principle developed in the Baroque era to elevate table pieces from the ordinary. The eight evenly curved lobes run from the rim to the base through the conical wall. The outer surface is matte rather than high-gloss, which makes the underlying niello band appear calmer than it would on polished silver: large chrysanthemums and sunflowers with radiate petals fill the band completely, flanked by companion flowers and curved leaf tendrils. Niello is not an applied paint, but a black inlay that is melted into engraved lines, ground flush, and polished—like ink in silver. The bowl is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where this technique has been documented since 1683. The approximately 690 g of solid silver are noticeable the moment you lift it—not thin sheet metal, but a piece with weight and stability.

Usage and occasions

With a volume of 1,450 ml and a diameter of 206 mm, this silver bowl is a true serving bowl for 4 to 6 people. It is as suitable for leaf and vegetable salads as it is for fruit salad, whose composition is further emphasized by the wavy rim. For punch or bowl, the volume is sufficient for 8 to 10 portions; for side dishes, antipasti, and dips, it serves a larger group. Empty on a sideboard, the bowl is a standalone decorative piece that is effective even without contents. As a gift, it suits those who appreciate a well-set table: for a silver anniversary, a milestone birthday, as a corporate gift for someone who understands home culture, or as a wedding gift for a couple looking to start with a piece that will last for generations.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

The underside of the ring foot provides sufficient space for a personal engraving—a date, initials, or a short sentence. This gives the bowl a second layer, accessible only to those who turn it over. Please let us know your engraving request when placing your order. Upon request, we can also include a 15 × 10 cm landscape-format photo-style SilberVerse card—digitally customized to match the occasion, free of charge. Please specify your request for this in the order field.

Care

Solid 925 silver is best cleaned with a soft silver polishing cloth; for heavier tarnish, a pH-neutral silver cleaner helps. The niello band is firmly bonded to the silver and is therefore no more sensitive than the silver itself—normal cleaning will not harm it. The matte surface remains at its best if you avoid aggressive scouring agents. Silverware is generally not suitable for the dishwasher. Since niello is a melted inlay and not a coating, it does not peel or fade—with every polishing, the contrasts become slightly deeper.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bowl suitable for daily use or only for decoration?
Both are possible. The solid 925 silver is robust enough for regular use when serving, and the ring foot provides a secure base. Wiping dry after each use and occasional polishing will keep the silver in prime condition.

Can I present the bowl as a wedding or anniversary gift?
Yes—that is one of its most common uses. The bowl comes in a gift box and can be personalized with an engraving and a SilberVerse card upon request.

Does the bowl contain any gilding?
No. This bowl consists exclusively of 925 sterling silver and niello—no gilding, no other metals. Matte silver and deep niello-black make up the entire aesthetic.
