Material and craftsmanship

The stem of this goblet features an unusual construction: instead of an ordinary baluster, an open silver heart forms the connection between the bowl and the base. Inside this heart hangs a small, freely moving key made of polished silver — it swings softly when the goblet is moved. The heart is not an applied ornament, but carries the entire construction: the chalice stands on the heart, and the heart stands on the base.

A wide Niello ornamental band with dense floral tendrils and golden accents runs around the bowl — crafted more generously than on the smaller chalices in the line. The base features its own narrower band in the same technique. Niello is a centuries-old black metal inlay that binds inseparably with the silver ground: not a lacquer, but a melted, leveled, and polished inlay — like ink in silver — which gains contrast with each polishing instead of fading. The piece originates from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia — one of the most traditional centers of Russian silversmithing, where this technique has been passed down through generations.

Care
