Material and workmanship

The tray is crafted from 925 sterling silver, meaning 92.5 percent fine silver. The rim is gilded, as is the cherry blossom motif that extends across the center of the reflective silver surface: a network of fine branches and blossoms reminiscent of a Japanese woodblock print, though engraved and gilded here in the Russian goldsmithing tradition. The handles showcase the second technique used in this piece: niello, the centuries-old art of filling fine engravings with a black inlay that is fused, sanded flush, and polished—like ink in silver. It is not a lacquer or paint, but a permanent bond with the silver itself that does not peel and gains contrast over time. This combination of a gilded central surface and niello-framed handles makes the tray a piece with three visible layers of material: bright silver, warm gold, and deep niello black. It was crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a manufactory with a long niello tradition in Northern Russia.
