Niello is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, burned in at over 800 degrees Celsius. It permanently bonds with the silver base. The dark ornamental lines on light silver create a contrast that sharpens with each passing year — not softens.

The geographically protected designation of origin makes genuine Ustyug niello a product of origin like champagne: It may only be produced there. Each piece bears the artist's manufactory mark, registered with the Russian Federal Assay Office.
