Material and craftsmanship

The carafe features a bulbous shape with a C-handle, a wide spout, and a lid with a ring knob—classically proportioned and intended for daily use, not just for the display case. Crafted from 925 sterling silver without gilding, it features a hand-applied niello engraving that differs significantly from most other patterns in our assortment: instead of a uniform ornamental band, a grapevine stretches freely across the surface—starting at the belly, winding diagonally upwards, branching out, and continuing just as a real vine grows. The leaves are crafted naturalistically with visible leaf veins, and the grapes hang in small, round clusters.

Every line of this composition was engraved into the silver by hand, after which the dark niello paste was fused into the engraved depressions. The result is neither paint nor lacquer, but a chemical-physical bond with the silver itself—you can imagine it like ink permanently soaking into the metal. With every polishing, the contrasts deepen; the vine becomes higher in contrast over the years, not paler. The carafe is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where the art of niello has been documented since 1683; each piece undergoes around 15 work steps there.

With a capacity of 1,550 ml, the carafe holds around two bottles of wine or water for six to eight guests at a long table—it belongs on tables where there is something to celebrate: weddings, milestone anniversaries, company celebrations, or as the centerpiece of a festive dinner. The oval field in the middle of the grapevines is part of the original design and intended to hold a personal mark—a monogram, a family crest, a winery logo, or a company signet.
