The collection was created in 1969 by the metal artist Elisaveta Fedorovna Tropina — contrasting niello blackening, brightly gilded accents and floral hop motifs, which are still considered one of the most distinctive works of Russian niello art today.

Material and workmanship

The body of each piece is drawn from 925 sterling silver, then assembled, finely engraved and inlaid with black niello mass. After polishing, partial gilding follows, which gives the inner surfaces and accents a warm brilliance. In Russian symbolism, hop motifs are considered a sign of prosperity, hospitality and joy of life. Niello is not a paint or varnish, but a dark metal alloy that is chemically-physically bonded to the silver — it does not fade, but gains contrast when polished.
