Material and workmanship

The silver body of the cups and saucers is engraved and inlaid with a niello alloy — a dark compound of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is burned into the engraved lines at high temperatures. Unlike a lacquer coating, the niello chemically and physically bonds with the base metal. It does not flake off, it does not fade — over time, it even becomes more expressive because polishing deepens the contrast between the dark ornament and the polished silver. The rim and handle of the cups feature partial gilding, which serves as a warm accent against the cool silver and dark niello. Silver, gold, and niello side by side — three values that support each other in this set, instead of competing.

Care

Clean the set by hand with warm water and a mild dish soap. You should avoid a silver dip bath, as it could damage the niello inlays. For the polished silver surfaces, a soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient occasionally; you do not need to aggressively treat the niello ornaments themselves. Store the pieces in the gift box or a closed case — this protects against tarnishing. With each polishing, the contrast between the dark niello and the bright silver does not become weaker, but clearer.

Yes. The cups are designed for espresso or strong coffee, the niello is heat-resistant and abrasion-proof — this set is deliberately made for use, not just for display.

Is engraving possible despite niello and gilding?
Individual engraving is possible on request. We will coordinate with the manufacturer exactly where it can be placed, to match the respective piece.

How does niello differ from normal engraving?
With pure engraving, the pattern is only cut into the surface. With the niello process, a dark metal alloy is additionally inlaid and burned into the engraved lines — the contrast remains permanently, because the niello becomes part of the metal and not just its surface.
