Material and workmanship

The hop motif is one of the most distinctive designs in the niello tradition. Each line of the tendrils is hand-engraved into the silver before the dark niello alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur fills the depressions and creates the typical deep black contrast when heated. Selected areas are then gilded, so that gold and black highlight each other — not a print, but a permanent, chemical-physical bond with the solid 925 sterling silver. All 21 pieces — teapot, sugar bowl, milk jug, six cups with saucers, and six spoons — bear the same ornament and the same hallmark, creating a complete, self-contained picture.

Use and occasions

Since the Middle Ages, hops have been considered a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and celebratory mood. Care

Please clean exclusively by hand, with mild dish soap and warm water. No dishwasher and no aggressive cleaning agents. For the silver surfaces, a soft polishing cloth is recommended. The niello ornament is permanently fused and does not fade, but the gilding should still be polished carefully to preserve the fine contours.
