Material and workmanship

The Hopfen coffee cup combines two materials that complement each other in function and effect: A porcelain insert takes on the actual task of drinking – it maintains temperature and taste neutrally. The casing made of 925 sterling silver encloses the porcelain like a piece of jewelry and bears the hop motif that gives this collection its name. Every line of the hop leaf and every umbel has been individually engraved into the silver and then inlaid with a classic niello alloy – that millennia-old technique where a black silver-sulfur compound is melted into the engraving and polished until it is permanently bonded with the metal. It does not peel off, it does not fade. The handle and base of the casing are gilded and create a warm contrast to the silvery-black ornamental band. The hallmark on the casing confirms material and origin.

Care

The silver casing is cleaned exclusively by hand – mild dish soap, soft cloth, no dishwasher and no silver dip. The porcelain insert can be rinsed separately with warm water. Abrasives or aggressive cleaners should generally be avoided, as they attack both the gilding and the polish of the silver. The niello engraving itself requires no special care – it is permanently anchored in the metal and its contrast deepens the more often it is polished.
