Material and workmanship

The capercaillie stands in an oval niello medallion on the front of the flask, surrounded by dense floral scrollwork in black against polished silver. The back features the same floral niello ornament without a figurative motif — pure scrollwork that makes the capercaillie on the front the main attraction. The screw cap with a safety chain sits on top, a practical detail that holds the lid in place while pouring.

The shot cup features an elegant niello wavy band in the middle and floral engraving along the upper rim — conically shaped, intended for pouring from the flask and for making a toast. The small silver funnel features a niello band at the edge and a handle for holding it, allowing the flask to be filled cleanly without spilling — a detail that shows this set has been thought through to the end. All three parts come from the SevChern manufactory and come in a dark blue gift box with satin inlay.

The capercaillie (Глухарь) is one of the proudest animals of the Russian forest — a bird that performs its mating display, calling out and becoming so absorbed in its own song that it forgets its surroundings.
