Description

Three horses in a flying gallop through the snow, a sleigh with travelers, fir trees and a church tower on the horizon: The "Troika" tea glass holder set features one of Russia's most famous pictorial motifs as a plastic high relief on a Podstakannik made of 925 sterling silver. It comes with a cut rhombus crystal glass and a classic "Prestige" teaspoon with an initial field for engraving, all united in a velvet-lined premium case.

  • Workmanship: plastic high relief, antique patinated (superficial blackening, not niello)

Material and workmanship

The Podstakannik is made of 925 sterling silver. The Troika scene runs as a plastic high relief around the holder: the middle horse at a high trot under the shaft bow harness, the two outer ones at a flat gallop, plus the sleigh box with travelers, fir forest and church tower silhouette. The base is domed and highly polished, the classic stirrup handle has a beaded edge and acanthus volutes. The recesses of the relief are antique patinated - a superficial silver sulfide layer that emphasizes recesses and three-dimensional structures, while the raised surfaces remain brightly polished. This blackening should not be confused with niello: niello is an inlay technique in which a melted sulfur-silver alloy is filled into engraved silver and filed flat, typical of the SevChern manufactory from Veliky Ustyug. The patination used here is a controlled applied protective and accentuating layer. The enclosed "Prestige" teaspoon is in the classic silverware style: an oval initial cartouche in a rocaille frame at the end of the handle, acanthus decoration at the neck, highly polished bowl. The "Tschajny" rhombus crystal glass has a cut geometric pattern that makes the tea sparkle warm and amber-colored. As a replaceable consumable part, it can be replaced if necessary.

Use and occasions

Since the 18th century, the troika has been the Russian stagecoach team and was traditionally also used as a wedding carriage – an image for the journey of life together. Nikolai Gogol described it at the end of his "Dead Souls" as a "bird troika," and Tchaikovsky dedicated his piano piece "November – Troika" to it. The set is particularly suitable as a wedding gift with this symbolic meaning, as a gift for Russia enthusiasts, Slavists, and literature connoisseurs, for horse lovers and those interested in breeding or trot racing, as well as a winter gift for Christmas or New Year's Eve. The troika is also suitable as an anniversary or diplomatic gift with an iconic motif, as well as an addition to a Podstakannik collection. For strong black tea as a concentrate, poured into the rhombus glass and topped up with hot water, the holder remains cool enough to grasp, while the glass retains the warmth – a technical principle that has not changed since the tsarist era. Further pieces can be found in our 925 Silver Flatware Collection.

Engraving and SilberVerse Card

The oval initial cartouche at the end of the spoon handle is deliberately left blank and is suitable for one to three initials or a family crest. We recommend hand-engraving by a silversmith so that the lines blend harmoniously with the other decorations. For every engraving, we can include a SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm format upon request – digitally designed, with a personal dedication, currently at no extra charge.

Care instructions

The blackening in the recesses is intentional and adds value – it is part of the three-dimensional design and should be treated accordingly. Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth – never in the dishwasher, never rub silver polish over the blackened grooves. After use, wipe dry and store in the case, which protects against air contact and slows down natural tarnishing. If the polished surfaces tarnish more heavily, a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive particles will help – exclusively on the raised areas, never in the blackened recesses. The rhombus glass is dishwasher safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing is gentler and keeps it crystal clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the blackening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique, for example from SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where black mass is melted into engravings. The blackening used here is a superficial patination in the recesses that enhances the three-dimensional effect of the high relief.

What does the Troika symbolize?
Since the 18th century, the troika has been the Russian stagecoach team: three horses side by side in front of a sleigh. It became a symbol of Russia, partly through Gogol's "Bird Troika" and Tchaikovsky's "November – Troika", and was traditionally also considered a wedding team.

Is the set dishwasher safe?
The silver parts are not – please clean the holder and spoon exclusively by hand. The rhombus crystal glass is dishwasher safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing is gentler.
