Material and craftsmanship

The oval silver relief made of 925 sterling shows a dog in a classic pointer standing pose — one front paw raised, head directed forward. The fur hatching and the oak leaf ornamentation on the edge of the medallion are executed in hand-engraved niello: a dark alloy is melted into hand-engraved lines, bonding chemically and physically with the silver. This is not a coating, but part of the metal itself, and becomes more contrasted with every polish. The medallion is mounted on a green velvet mat, set in a dark wooden frame with a narrow gold trim on the inside — the oval shape and the green velvet color are a deliberate special design within the collection.

The piece belongs to the FAUNA line of the Nielloa collection, which we curate at SilberKosmos — animal artworks in silver, crafted by the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, a Russian center of silversmithing since 1683.

Use and occasions

In European culture, the hunting dog stands for loyalty, endurance, and the close connection between human and animal. No other animal shares as many hours in the field or in everyday life with its human — the motif speaks of this bond without overstating it.

As a gift, the wall art is suitable for milestone birthdays of hunters, for retirement after decades in the field, or as a worthy memory of a long-time companion on four paws. It is also suitable as a Father's Day gift or for dog lovers in general — the pointer portrait appeals to anyone attached to a dog, even without a connection to hunting.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

After inspection, we engrave a date, name, or short dedication on the back or on the frame — the dog's name combined with the years of your time together is a popular choice. On request, we also include with your order a 15 × 10 cm SilberVerse card: a digitally designed photo card that carries only your desired text — free of charge.

Care

Treat the silver surface occasionally with a soft polishing cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and direct water. The niello fur hatching will actually become more contrasted over time as the surrounding silver is polished brighter. The wooden frame does not require any special care but should not be exposed to a permanently humid environment.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this wall art have an oval medallion instead of a square relief?

The oval format is a deliberate special design for the hunting dog within the FAUNA line — it is reminiscent of classic medallions and matches the dog's calm, vigilant posture.

Is the motif also suitable for people without a hunting dog?

Yes, the pointer in a standing pose is a classic dog portrait that appeals to every dog lover, regardless of breed or hunting context.

Is the niello engraving a coating that can wear off?

No. Niello is not a coating, but a dark alloy that is melted into the engraved lines and bonds firmly with the silver. It does not wear off, but gains contrast with every polish.
