Butter dish 925 silver with lid and niello engraving round shape

A circumferential niello ornament runs as a dark band around the center of this bell — floral motifs, blossoms, and vines, burned deep black into the silver. If you are looking for a butter dish that makes a statement on the table even without gold plating, you will find here a piece that relies entirely on the contrast between matte silver and deep niello black.

Material and craftsmanship

This butter dish is crafted from 925 sterling silver, with no gold plating — the contrast between cool matte silver and the deep black of the niello engraving defines the entire design. Niello is one of the oldest jewelry-making techniques in the world: a black inlay that is fused into the engraved lines, sanded flat, and polished — like ink in silver; it is not a print, and there is no paint to peel off. The motif on the surrounding band features a classic Russian floral pattern: large blossoms with curved leaves and vines, symmetrically arranged and hand-engraved. A simple domed lid with a ring handle finishes the top. This butter dish originates from Russian silversmithing, which we curate for our "SilberKosmos" collection.

Usage and occasions

This silver dish with lid is more than just a butter dish: the round bell shape is suitable for butter, cheese, honeycomb, chocolates, or small delicacies. As a butter bell, it protects against light; as a serving dome, it makes every table more festive. It belongs on the table every day, not in a display case — and because it is made of solid silver, it does not deteriorate over time, but rather becomes more beautiful. For a wedding, anniversary, or milestone birthday, it is a gift for those who understand what a well-set table means.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

After assessment, a personal engraving is possible, such as initials, a date, or a dedication — the dome provides space for this without any niello filling. With every personalization, we include a complimentary, digitally designed SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm photo format (landscape) — a one-of-a-kind piece for this specific gift.

Care

925 sterling silver and niello require hand washing only — no harsh chemical detergents, no dishwasher, no scouring pads. Use a soft cloth after washing and store in a dry place. The niello ornament is permanent; it does not change and does not oxidize. Silver itself can tarnish, which can be corrected with a silver polishing cloth. The matte surface will develop its own character over the years — this is not a flaw, it is patina.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes this butter dish from other silver butter dishes?

This silver bell has no gold plating — 925 silver, a matte surface, and a deep black niello ornament create a contrast that succeeds without gold and is striking precisely for that reason.

Is this silver dish with lid also suitable as a cheese dome or serving dome?

Yes — the round bell shape with its matching lid is versatile: butter, soft cheese, honey, chocolates, or small appetizers. 925 sterling silver is taste-neutral, and it is cleaned by hand only.

Is an engraving possible?

Yes, subject to assessment — for instance with initials, a date, or a dedication. The dome offers space for this, and we will check the best placement before the order is finalized.
