On the body of the carafe lies a dense floral cartridge in niello black, interspersed with golden accents in blossoms and foliage. The handle, spout, and ring-shaped lid knob are gilded and frame the ornament like a decorative band. The gilding also protects the surface from tarnishing and gives the carafe its warm, golden undertone, while the niello engraving provides the dark contrasting points that accentuate this gold tone.

Material and craftsmanship

The engraving on this carafe is not a surface decoration, but part of the metal. Niello is melted into the depressions of the engraving and permanently anchored in the silver when it cools — the ornament does not rub off, does not fade, and does not change over time. Weighing 680 g, the carafe has a noticeable weight: enough silver to be stable, not to tip over when pouring, and to have a wall thickness that retains temperature.
