Material and Workmanship

All eight pieces are made of 925 sterling silver, gilded, and adorned with the same niello paisley ornament — the teardrop-shaped, curved form from the Persian-Indian cultural sphere, which has represented the tree of life, fertility, and abundance for centuries. Niello is a silver-copper-sulfur alloy that is melted into engraved lines and then remains inseparably bonded with the silver; with each polish, the contrast to the polished silver becomes more distinct. The carafe has a teardrop-shaped silhouette with an onion knob and a hinged lid. The six shot glasses stand on gilded stems and each bear an oval niello medallion with the same paisley motif. The tray completes the ensemble with a wide gold rim and circumferential niello ornamentation. The set is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where the niello tradition has been documented since 1683.
