Material and workmanship

This bowl is the only piece in the entire SevChern niello line with a wavy lobed rim – a design principle that was developed in the Baroque period to elevate tableware items from the ordinary. The eight evenly curved lobes run from rim to foot through the conical wall. The outer surface is matted instead of high-gloss, making the niello band below appear calmer than on polished silver: large chrysanthemums and sunflowers with radial petals completely fill the band, flanked by accompanying flowers and curved leaf tendrils. Niello is not an applied color, but an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur that is melted into engraved depressions and chemically and physically bonds with the silver. SevChern from Veliky Ustyug has been using this technique since 1683. The approximately 690 g of solid silver are palpable when first lifted – not thin sheet metal, but a piece with weight and stability.

Use and occasions

With a volume of 1,450 ml and a diameter of 206 mm, this silver bowl is a true serving bowl for 4 to 6 people. It is suitable for leafy salads and vegetable salads as well as for fruit salads, whose composition is further emphasized by the wavy rim. For punch or bowl, the volume is sufficient for 8 to 10 servings, for side dishes, antipasti, and dips for a larger group. Empty on the sideboard, the bowl is an independent decorative piece that works without content. Care

Solid 925 silver is best cleaned with a soft silver polishing cloth; for heavier tarnishing, a pH-neutral silver cleaner helps. The niello band is chemically bonded with the silver and is therefore no more sensitive than the silver itself – normal cleaning will not harm it. The matted surface remains most beautiful if you avoid aggressive abrasive cleaners. Silverware is generally not suitable for the dishwasher. Since niello is a fused alloy and not a coating, it does not peel or fade – with each polishing, the contrasts slightly deepen.

Both are possible. The solid 925 silver is robust enough for regular use when serving; the ring base provides a secure stand. Wiping dry after each use and occasional polishing keeps the silver in the best condition.
