Material and Craftsmanship

The tulip is the natural shape for sparkling wine and champagne: slender enough to retain the effervescence, slightly open at the top to guide the aromas to the nose. In silver, this shape acquires a different weight than in glass, noticeable upon the first lift. The grapevine ornament sits as a wide band in the upper third of the bowl: blossoms, leaves, and small grapes intertwine in niello black on polished silver, hand-engraved and filled with the black sulfur-silver alloy. Below, the silver surface remains smooth down to the stem — a division that gives the bowl clear proportions: the decorative part where the eye first looks, the calm part where the hand grips. Without gilding, this glass displays the purest form of niello contrast. Crafted in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where this hand-engraving technique has been cultivated for generations.
