Description
From about ten place settings on, a normal cup disappears among plates, candles, and bowls. That is exactly what the Jumbo size is for: it remains visible from every seat at the table. The catalog calls it that, and the name fits — this is a class of its own, not just another size up.

- Eliyahu cup in 925 sterling silver, Jumbo version
- Height approx. 33 cm, base approx. 15 cm — silver weight approx. 1.07 kg

- Interior gold-plated
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
When this size is the right one
Thirty-three centimeters is a lot for a cup. The question is not whether it looks beautiful — the question is which table it is made for.
At a Seder for six people at a normal dining table, a cup of this height seems too large; it takes up space needed for plates. At a long table for twenty or thirty people — in a community, in a large household, or with several families together — it is, however, the only format that can still be perceived from every seat.
It is a cup for large gatherings. Those who regularly celebrate in groups of two or four are better served by a 25 or 28 cm model.
The base
With a diameter of approx. 15 cm, the base is exceptionally wide — and that is a structural necessity. A 33 cm tall cup with a narrow base would be a risk on a table where many people are sitting and plates are being passed around.
The weight of a good kilogram helps with this: it sits low, in the solid base, and makes the piece tip-proof. You notice it when lifting — the cup feels heavier than its size would suggest.
The fifth cup
On the evening of the Seder, four cups of wine are on the table from which one drinks. They represent the four promises from the story of the Exodus. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Elijahu.
It belongs to the prophet Elijah, whose coming announces the future redemption. Toward the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him — in many families, a child goes to do this. In a large group, this is the cup that everyone looks at when the moment comes.
Material and origin
The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated ware is twofold for a cup: chasing is only possible in solid silver — a plating would tear during hammering — and the interior gilding protects exactly where you cannot polish. A cup that is filled over decades needs both.
The interior is gold-plated.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand with punches. At the upper rim of the bowl, the leaf tips detach from the wall; they are worked out of thicker material because hammering alone is not enough for this.
As a gift
As a donation to a community, as an honorary gift, for a golden wedding anniversary. A piece of this size is rarely bought for one's own household — it marks an occasion and is often purchased collectively by several givers.
Engraving
With this format, the wide base rim is a generous surface for engraving — enough for a multi-line dedication, a year, and several names. For pieces going to communities, the occasion is often recorded there. We will advise you in advance. Upon request, we will enclose a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside, using a long soft cloth. No dishwasher. Work carefully around the free-standing leaf tips and hold the cup by the knop or base, not the rim. Tarnish is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth between the leaves may remain. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too big for a normal dining table?
For smaller groups, yes. It is intended for long tables and large gatherings. For home use, we recommend the 25 to 28 cm models.
Is it stable?
Yes. The approx. 15 cm wide base and its own weight of a good kilogram make it tip-proof.
Is there a matching plate?
Yes — the plate of approx. 28×28 cm belongs to this size category. We offer both together as a Jumbo set.
Is the cup kosher?
We carry silver equipment and describe its use — we cannot provide religious legal advice. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your community.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
Why there is a Jumbo size
This size sits between the 28.5 cm cup and the 51 cm piece. It is made for when you are celebrating at a long table: from about ten place settings on, a 25 cm cup disappears among plates, candles, and bowls. Approx. 33 cm remains visible from every seat.
The plate approx. 28×28 cm and the Jumbo set consisting of both parts originate from the same model number. With gold-plated ornament, the same shape is available as the Jumbo partially gold-plated.
One size below is the cup with knop, and above it, only the 51 cm cup. If you are wavering between sizes: the deciding factor is not the room, but the number of people at the table.
A 33 cm cup hardly fits in any cupboard — and it doesn't need to. Such pieces stand all year round on a sideboard, a console table, or in a display case with a high shelf. Those who shy away from the height should consider this before buying; those who seek it get an eye-catcher here.
