Description

For the large goblets in the series, a round plate would be too small — that's why it's square. The dimensions are matched to the jumbo goblet; a tall goblet on too small a plate looks top-heavy, and that's immediately noticeable.

At a glance

  • Plate for the Eliyahu goblet made of 925 sterling silver
  • Dimensions approx. 28 × 28 cm — silver weight approx. 0.96 kg
  • Wide chased rim, smooth mirrored surface with rounded corners
  • Matched to the jumbo goblets in the series
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacture since 1948

Why square instead of round

The smaller Eliyahu plates in the line are round. This changes from a certain goblet size — and there are two reasons for this.

The first is geometric. A goblet with a 15 cm foot diameter needs a stable base. With a round plate, the diameter would have to grow significantly to still have a rim; the piece would become expansive and difficult to place. A square of the same edge length offers additional space in the corners without appearing larger overall.

The second is practical. On a full Seder table, a square can be aligned with table edges and other dishes. A round always lies a little loosely between everything else.

Rim and Mirror

The rim — the circumferential edge — carries the entire ornament, densely chased tendrils with flowers. The mirror in the middle remains smooth, with slightly rounded corners.

This is function, not taste. The goblet stands on the mirror: a chased surface underneath would wobble, and wine residues could not be removed from the depressions without leaving a trace. A smooth surface is the only solution that fulfills both.

At approx. 960 grams, the plate lies heavily on the table — this is also intentional: a goblet weighing over a kilogram must not shift its base.

The fifth goblet

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks — for the four promises of liberation from the Exodus story. A fifth is filled, but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu.

It belongs to the prophet Eliyahu, whose coming heralds future redemption. Towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him. The goblet remains filled all evening — and with it the plate underneath.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced in this way — the plating tears under the hallmark. And it cannot be re-polished arbitrarily often because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handwork during its creation and the care over generations. The piece is hallmarked.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand with punches, stroke by stroke. On a rim section of over a meter, this means many thousands of strokes.

Individually or as a set

Eliyahu goblets are passed down through generations; the plate is often missing. An individually available plate complements an inherited piece.

Those starting anew will also find goblets and plates in this series as a matched set — then the dimensions, ornament, and polish will match from the outset.

Engraving

The smooth mirror is largely covered when the goblet is in place. For a visible dedication, the back is suitable; for one that is discovered when clearing the table, the mirror itself. Both are common; we will discuss it with you beforehand. On request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased depressions of the rim. Wipe off wine residues quickly. Tarnishing is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth can remain in the tendrils. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and tableware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which goblet does it fit?

The Jumbo goblet of approx. 33 cm. We offer both together as a Jumbo set.

Why is it square?

A square offers additional space in the corners for a wide goblet base without appearing larger overall — and it is easier to align on a full table.

Can I use the plate for other purposes?

Yes. It holds pastries, fruit, or a selection of cheeses.

Is it kosher?

We offer silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal information. Your community can answer questions about ritual suitability.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality manufacturer's packaging.

The Jumbo size

With approx. 28×28 cm, this plate belongs to the Jumbo goblet of approx. 33 cm. The dimensions are coordinated: a 33 cm goblet on a 24 cm plate would look top-heavy; here, the proportion is correct.

We offer both together as a Jumbo set. With gilded ornament, the same plate is available as a partially gilded version. One size larger, for the 51 cm goblet, is the plate of approx. 37.5×37.5 cm.

A square silver plate of this size is also useful outside of ritual use — as a coaster for a carafe, as a tray for pastries, as a calm surface under a candelabrum. It is part of the line and at the same time a piece that stands on its own.

A square silver plate of 28 cm is a useful piece even without a goblet — as a coaster for a carafe, as a display on a sideboard, or placed upright on a shelf. This way, it doesn't disappear into the closet for eleven months but remains in use.
